*Apply by July 26, 2019 to maximize possibilities for placement this year

National Health Corps SF/AmeriCorps –operated by SFCCC – is recruiting for 16-18 positions to begin September 3, 2019. While not traditional salaried employee positions, these are exciting opportunities to be of service and gain invaluable experience in providing community health education and care for underserved communities. NHC SF members commit to providing 1700 hours of direct service in a local community health setting from September 3, 2019 to July 20, 2020, an average 40 hours per week. The bulk of hours are served at their host sites, along with time in training, on committees and in Community Service Days. Benefits of service include a basic living allowance of $20,000, health insurance (if not already covered), commuter checks, childcare (if eligible), loan forbearance, and a $6095 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award after service completion to be used toward higher education or student loans. Members help build healthier communities by focusing on one or more of three main areas at their host sites:

  • Improving nutrition and physical activity to reduce obesity and/or chronic conditions linked to obesity

  • Increasing older adults’ (50 yrs+) ability to remain in their homes with the same or improved quality of life

  • Addressing Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)

Some of the activities members may undertake include education about prevention and access to health care and support services for high risk and vulnerable patients; health coaching; conducting health screenings and linking patients to care and treatment; patient outreach to engage in health promotion groups and classes; promoting civic engagement; supporting older adults to improve their health through technology; and developing programs and classes to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Members are provided with ongoing training and a site mentor to help them achieve professional growth and excellence in the healthcare field.
