AmeriCorps Week is an annual event designed to draw attention
to the valuable role AmeriCorps members play in communities throughout the
United States. It also serves as a time to bring more American citizens into
service and to acknowledge the support of community partners.
For this year’s AmeriCorps
Week, held from March 9th – 17th, the
SFCCC Community HealthCorps Team partnered with Lifelong Medical Care’s CHC
members for “Growing Our Way to Health” at their East Oakland Health Center.
This project involved the renovation of the clinic’s Adult Day Center into a
new Community Wellness Center and the construction of a rooftop garden for
staff and patients to enjoy.
Throughout the week members
from both programs worked side by side “To Get Things Done!” In the Wellness
Center members helped to re-paint the walls, assemble and arrange furniture,
hang artwork, and generally turn the space into a welcoming, comfortable environment
for patients. Up on the roof members were hard at work constructing planter
boxes, sanding and finishing wood furniture, preparing soil for the garden
beds, and painting the perimeter walls.
March 16th was chosen as the culminating celebratory event date for the
“Growing Our Way to Health” Project. It also marked the first annual Community HealthCorps Alumni Day and we
were lucky enough to have several alumni present to help with the finishing
touches at LMC’s East Oakland site. There to celebrate this inaugural event
with us was Randy George, the Community HealthCorps Director of Member
Engagement, as well as several LMC staff.
“Thank You!” goes out to all the Community HealthCorps Navigators & Coordinators, LMC Staff,
and community partners who contributed to this event and made our 2013
AmeriCorps Week such a success!
