National AHEC Organization Conference Addresses Health Care Workforce Issues

The National AHEC Organization (NAO) held its biannual conference on July 29 to August 2 in San Antonio, Texas.  The AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) program is administered by the federal Dept. of Health and Human Services/Health Resources and Services Administration.  The AHEC mission is to enhance access to quality health care, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of health care professionals through community/academic educational partnerships. The conference focused on meeting emerging health care workforce needs under the Affordable Care Act and related transformations to the health care system. 

SFCCC has served as the AHEC for San Francisco since 2005.  Allen Meyer, SFCCC’s Vice President, Programs, also serves as the Center Director of the San Francisco AHEC.  He attended the NAO conference as part of the California delegation, and participated in workshops on a variety of topics, including workforce aspects of Accountable Care Organizations, training strategies related to quality improvement and Meaningful Use of health information technology, and maximizing the impact of AHEC activities in addressing vital national health issues.
