The SOS program utilizes a mobile medical van, equipped with an exam room, which provides services in parks, under freeway overpasses, and on street corners – wherever our homeless clients congregate.
SOS also provides “suitcase” (a carryall containing the medical equipment needed) clinics at designated locations where homeless people receive services, including soup kitchens. The program is staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, and outreach workers. Patients are treated on the spot for urgent medical needs and are then referred to local health clinics for follow-up care and to establish a medical home, where they can receive needed care on a continuing basis.
This is the second year that the Safeway Foundation has provided this grant support!
