For National Health Center Week 2011 - SFCCC focused on the theme of providing information and clarification on Health Care Reform as it relates to San Francisco health care. We were honored to have Dr. Kelly Pfeifer, Medical Director of the San Francisco Health Plan, as our guest speaker at the St. Anthony Free Medical Clinic event Tuesday, August 9; and Tangerine Brigham, Deputy Director and Director of Healthy San Francisco at the San Francisco Department of Public Health as our guest speaker at the South of Market Health Center event Wednesday, August 10. Both presentations were lively and informative and both were followed by dynamic "Question and Answer" sessions with the audience. The attendees were colleagues from human services agencies in the city, including three from organizations that were attending an SFCCC event for the first time; a major Funder, and SFCCC and partner clinics Board and Staff members. Our third event was the celebration of the SFCCC Street Outreach Services (SOS) mobile medical van. Thanks to the gracious Hamm's Building staff, on Thursday, August 11 we parked the van at the side of building and opened it up for tours. It gave us an opportunity to show the van and talk with our fellow tenants about the work of SOS. It is the only mobile medical van in San Francisco that provides urgent and preventive medical care to homeless people where they are - including on the street, in parks, under freeway overpasses, and at soup kitchens. The van serves more than 1,500 clients per year.
Each year during National Health Center Week (commemorated all over the country during the second week in August), SFCCC celebrates the community health center movement and the community based clinics that provide primary care to the low-income, working poor, homeless and uninsured patients they serve.
